LAN2007: Social Urbanism in Medellin
Professors Maria Bellalta, Sara Borque, and Margarita Iglesia
Assignment: create an urban master plan and site plan for Pajarito, a dense community in Medellin, Colombia that is home to several informal housing communities.
Solution: the development of a government housing typology that is informed by informal settlements and considers the social factors that create high quality environments. This transit oriented development type is informed by the creation of a transportation master plan for Pajarito that includes linear bus service and expansion of Metrocable service to Medellin.
Discussion: Government housing is often seen as ugly due to the repetition of form and lack of thought into building interaction with in-between spaces. This typology transforms creating a highly replicable form that is still unique from unit to unit. The organizing principles proposed create engaging public and semi-public space between units that also takes advantage of circulation opportunities through the site.
